Governments everywhere are starting to recognise the talent and potential in refugee communities. They are responding with new visas, pathways and services. In the coming years, thousands of displaced people will move internationally for work, leveraging their own professional skills to secure their futures.
When war broke out in his native Syria, software developer Derar Alkateeb and his family were forced to flee. Stranded in Jordan for six years, Derar wasn’t able to work legally. To survive, the family often had to rely on support from loved ones overseas.
"It’s unbearable if you are not allowed to do what you love; not allowed to use your skills and passion to get ahead in life; not allowed to be a productive person in society. With limited income opportunities, life was really tough."
in 2018, Derar was offered a job with a tech company in Australia, but the costs associated with international migration came as a shock. With limited options, Derar accepted a cash grant from (Pathway Club Co-Founder) John Cameron to keep the family afloat until Derar could establish himself in Australia.
A few years later, when Derar's family was settled and his career successfully rebooted, Derar felt compelled to 'pay back' the money he'd received. He and John envisioned a revolving fund that would enable past grant recipients to 'pay-it-forward', paving the way for those following in their footsteps. Thus, Pathway Club was born.
Organisations like Talent Beyond Boundaries are dedicated to facilitating job matches and making skilled migration accessible for displaced people.
But for people who have been living displaced, perhaps for years without a stable income, the expenses involved in relocating for work can be a deal-breaker. Employers generally cover some of these costs, but not all - and sometimes not for family members.
Pathway Club grants are unconditional and untied. Funds can used by recipients to cover a variety of expenses, including health tests and vaccinations, police checks, ordering copies of official documents, passport applications, and assistance with pre-departure accommodation and living expenses if required.
Pathway Club makes cash grants to displaced people at a pivotal moment; when they have an opportunity to move internationally for work in order to achieve security and self-sufficiency.
